The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has snubbed Sky’s objection to a recent advert for Virgin Broadband, with Sky claiming that it presents fabricated content.

In the ad, Virgin Media has promoted its broadband on its unique selling point of being “future proof”, apart from its service being offered through superior fibre optics technology. Sky made no pretensions about its disbelief in Virgin’s claim that the development of its fibre optic network was premeditated in keeping with the internet.

Sky’s argument was based on the fact that fibre internet existed long before the advent of internet itself. Therefore, it was highly improbable that a fibre optic cable network can be actually “custom designed to suit the internet”.

In addition, Sky also believed that Virgin Media was not doing right by claiming its superiority over any of its competitors in its ability to handle challenges posed by next generation internet services. Sky insisted there isn’t substantial proof for Virgin Media to back such a claim.

However, the ASA cleared Virgin’s advertisement on the grounds that the company was only trying to project its USP – Fibre Optic Broadband, which can prove more profitable to users as compared to the copper wire networks of ADSL.

However, Virgin Media conceded that copper wires used by certain providers of which Sky is one, fail to provide customers with low signal hindrances and potent capacity to transmit data, a claim that has not gone down too well with Sky, which uses copper wires for its network.
