Comments are off for this postJournaling Your Book To Completion
On any given day, how many people, events, problems, projects, family issues, things to remember and appointments are running through your mind? A LOT, right? If you’re writing a book, you have to add on top of that a whole other world of characters, events, settings, plots, (if you’re writing fiction) or stories, bullet points, theories and rhetoric (if you’re writing non-fiction). How do you keep track of it all?
Keeping a journal for your book can be a great tool. In it you can keep your outline, character details, plotting charts and anything else that serves as a guide for helping you stay on track. The following is a simple outline of headings for setting up your daily journal pages to help you with the day-to-day writing of your book.
Word Goal
At the top of your page start out with the date of the writing session and set a goal for how many words you will write for the day. Make the number big enough to challenge you, but not too big that you feel overwhelmed if you consistently miss it. You can also keep the word goal in line with what you’re working on that day. If you are re-writing a chapter instead of creating a new one, then your word count for the day will be significantly smaller. (And that’s okay!)
Today’s Work Will Focus On…
Under this heading you will plan out what you want to handle in the session. Are you writing a dialogue where your main character learns someone’s innermost secrets? Are you doing a scene setter that places the reader in the heart of your book? Are you writing a how-to chapter to explain how the reader can put to use the new strategies you’ve given them on how to be a better networker? Doing this also makes the word goal less intimidating because you immediately see what you’re going to do with all those words!
What Problems Might I Encounter?
There WILL be problems–no big deal. Note what they may be so you won’t get tangled up in the problem as you’re sitting in front of the computer screen. Write down each one. Some examples: “How do I get my character to go from living at home to a place nearer to where all the action is happening?” “How do I introduce the character to the guy who will ruin her life?” “How do I shrink my program down to 5 simple steps that people can remember?” Acknowledging problems really helps to lessen their power over your writing. You aren’t scared away from a problem so easily when you know you can come up with a solution.
Possible Solutions Include…
This is where you’ll do a quick brainstorming of how you can solve the problem. You can try out one of the solutions in your writing session. If that doesn’t work, you’ll have a list of things you can try the next day. What’s great about this is that you’re starting to train your mind to look for answers. You’ll find that when you’re writing consistently, you’ll be thinking about ideas and solutions all the time–in your car, in the shower, while you’re taking a walk. This is really where the magic happens. I truly believe that the bulk of books can be worked out in your head–then you have to sit down and get it onto some paper!
Today’s Result and Where It Will Take Me Tomorrow…
At the end of your writing for the day you’ll want to take note of what you accomplished. Maybe the dialogue you wrote today has opened up another avenue you’d like to explore with your character. Or perhaps you’ve noticed a big hole in the research you’ve done for the biography you’re writing and you realize you need to make a few more calls. I like to print out the pages I’ve written so I can really see and feel what I’ve done for the day. It makes me excited to do more. The idea here is to reward yourself for your work and also see that you have more to do. You’re less likely to get writer’s block if you see that you still have plenty more to say for your next session. But if you do happen to get stuck anyway, go to…
Your Fun Page
This is the page where you just dawdle and dream when the writing isn’t quite happening. I had a page with “Acknowledgments” written at the top. Whenever I didn’t feel like writing, I would go to this page and think about who I wanted to thank when the book was finished! It was fun to add names or cross them out depending on my mood! Having such a page helped me stay connected to my vision of being a published author. Your page could have the list of cities for your book tour, or notes on the introduction you would give before your readings. Keep it light, keep it fun. This way, getting to the end of your book will be a pleasure, not a struggle. Isn’t that the way you want it to be?

Preschool Graduation Cap
Red, yellow and blue are some of the colors that a child’s preschool graduation cap can come in; most institutions prefer their graduation caps to be in primary colors. As the cameras click away during the graduation ceremonies, one feature that is hard to miss on the preschool graduation cap is the tassel. The tassel’s color may match that of the cap or may be in a different color. The tassel helps to make the cap more beautiful. A few preschools ask the parents of the little ones to buy their own preschool graduation cap. In this case one can buy the cap from the internet or from any shop that sells the caps. Alternatively, they can choose to make the cap as paper is one of the materials that can be used to make the cap. Others on the other hand buy the caps for the children in bulk thus they get to save money.

Comments are off for this postTalk About Confidence
If you asked me to choose the single greatest benefit I could claim as the result of my Toastmasters experience, I would choose confidence. With so many skills and techniques to be learned, confidence can be the most elusive. Confidence is stealthy. It creeps up on you, slowly at first, then building in intensity until one day you realize it’s there.
Confidence is not the thing that propels you to the front of a room to give a talk. That’s courage. Confidence is not what gives you the ability to speak fluently and elegantly on your topic. That’s expertise. Nor is confidence the way in which you move about the platform, your emphatic gestures or your booming voice. That’s presentation style. The actual substance of your contribution is more subtle, more sophisticated than mere flash.
Confidence is quieter. It comes from the knowledge that no matter the calamity or crisis, you can trust your ability to cope gracefully. Confidence is that esoteric something that can be difficult to describe, yet you know it when you see it.
Confidence is acquired, not given. It is an idiosyncrasy in our language that we say, “That really gave me a lot of confidence.” I tend to think of confidence “given” as that which is temporary, such as a compliment. It can be fleeting, when, for example, you are the recipient of an unflattering remark ten minutes later. Instead, think of confidence as the result of a simple mathematical equation: Time plus experience equals confidence.
The first portion of the equation, time, is a constant. Time elapses, whether you like it or not. The second part of the equation is the variable. Experience is simply trial and error, trial and success. You must have both, or there will be nothing that can be learned. In any competition, it is the person who comes in at second place that gains more from the experience. It is the second place winner who picks apart his performance, analyzes every angle, and strategizes the next step to success. No one likes to lose, but if you are at all competitive you will use the next attempt and the experience of coming up short to win. How many times have you said, “I won’t make that mistake again”? Knowledge is one of the ingredients that makes experience a variable. We choose to learn from our mistakes.
Confidence doesn’t come from being told that you are good, it lies in knowing that you’re good. From there, greatness is an exercise. It’s up to you to use time and experience to your fullest potential. This may require new choices, but by that time you will have earned the confidence you will need to go as far as you desire. You will also possess the skills and experience that will enable you to teach others. Talk about confidence!

Comments are off for this postNine Steps to Successfully Writing Your Novel
Writing a novel is not as difficult as you might think, and completing a novel is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. However, it’s not without its problems.
Many people dream of writing the great American novel, you know the one, the book that gets accepted and published by a traditional publisher, hits the New York Times bestseller list and the author makes loads of money and never has to work a traditional job again. Unfortunately, this can be an unrealistic view of what being a successful writer entails. I don’t mean to say this doesn’t happen but it’s rare. If you are serious about being a writer and successfully writing a novel for publication then there are some steps which may help you along your journey.
1. You should treat your writing as though it were any other job you wanted to do well at. Now I realize this sounds ominous to those of you who may view your writing as relaxing and fun, but I’ve found if I don’t treat my writing as though it were a job, I don’t write. The main point I’m making here is that you must carve out specified blocks of time each day to work on your writing.
2. Exercise each day. No, I don’t mean go sit on your exercise bike for 30 minutes, I mean practice your writing. You can do this by keeping a journal or diary, writing short articles, or writing poetry. I’m sure if you think about it you can come up with others.
3. Make sure you show and not tell. This was one of the biggest roadblocks for me when I began writing as I had a tendency to “tell” my story rather than “showing” the reader what was happening. Showing is where you use descriptive language to create a picture that the reader can see in his/her mind, whereas telling is where you simply are relating what happens without giving the reader any language that helps them see it in their mind.
4. Create goals for your writing. Goals such as how many pages, paragraphs, or words you’d like to write each day. Also keep track of the goals you complete on a calendar, that way you can see how often you reach your goals, and if you don’t reach them you can come up with ideas to better reach them.
5. Write in the same place every day, and make sure it is a place where you won’t be disturbed for your set amount of writing time. On the couch with your laptop or notebook propped on your legs watching television would not be a good choice. Neither would a room with no door that can be shut, or which is close to where there are a lot of distractions such as the noise of people talking.
6. Carry a letter sized notebook with you at all times to write or sketch ideas that come to you for your current book, or future novels, articles or poems. That way you don’t forget them, and trust me you will if you don’t write them down.
7. Be careful of who you allow to read the drafts of your novel, make sure it is someone you trust and whom you know will give constructive and useful criticism, if criticism is necessary. If you know your mother, spouse, best friend, sister whomever doesn’t support the idea of your writing then don’t allow them to read your drafts, in fact you don’t even have to tell them about your writing. Negative criticism has often been the culprit for preventing truly great works from both being completed and published. Don’t let your novel be one of those by not letting those you know who are going to be negative read it. Save yourself some heartache and choose wisely. Sometimes total strangers are the best to critique your manuscript. There are many places online to post your manuscript or portions of it to be critiqued.
8. Utilize down times to write such as when you are riding public transportation, or waiting in the doctor’s office. Most of us hold down regular jobs in addition to our writing so carving out blocks of time can sometimes be difficult. If you utilize your down times as writing times you’ll be able to write more and schedule greater amounts of time to write, which will put you that much closer to completing your writing project.
9. Be willing to write crap. Often it is out of what we consider to be some of our worst writing that gold nuggets can be found. Sometimes it is just an idea, or maybe we realize a better way to write a scene. Whatever gold nuggets you pull from your writing whether you consider it to be your worst or only your semi-worst, being willing to continue writing and working through these times when you think what you’re writing is truly bad is one of the keys to finishing the first draft to your novel.
While these certainly aren’t the only steps to successfully completing the first draft of your novel, I’ve found them to be the key steps. I encourage you to add others as you find them, as I’m sure you will. In the end it is only you who can choose which steps work best for you.

Comments are off for this postDialogue Tags – A Study in Common Errors
Verb and Subject
Incorrect:
“I bet you two had a fine time,” said Ben.
When using tags, it’s unusual to have the verb before the subject. The general rule of thumb is to use this construction sparingly, as a rare change in pace or flow. In addition, many editors are asking this construction not appear at all in a manuscript.
Correct:
“I bet you two had a fine time,” Ben said.
The Comma and As
Incorrect:
“Do you kiss toads often? Or are you just a little weird?” Betty asked, wrinkling her nose in distaste.
“I often find the little green guys cute. You should try it sometime,” Bertha said as she giggled.
In both instances, the comma after asked, and the ‘as’ after said, indicate the dialogue tag isn’t necessary. Each is greatly improved by removing the tag and allowing the following sentence to stand on its own.
Correct:
“Do you kiss toads often? Or are you just a little weird?” Betty wrinkled her nose in distaste.
“I often find the little green guys cute. You should try it sometime.” Bertha giggled.
Unnecessary Tags
Incorrect:
Mary scoffed at the idea. “I don’t think you want me at your party,” she replied.
Since we are firmly in Mary’s head at the point of her dialogue, it can be assumed it is her reply. If you use a tag like this, ask yourself if it’s really necessary. Is it obvious this is her reply? Then you don’t need it. New writer’s struggle with the idea that every bit of dialogue needs to be accredited to a character, otherwise the reader will be confused. The idea is to write so well from one character’s perspective, that the reader will immediately tell who’s dialogue it is.
Correct:
Mary scoffed at the idea. “I don’t think you want me at your party.”
Over Explaining the Tag
Incorrect:
“I don’t care if you kiss all the frogs in the world, you aren’t bringing that toad to my party,” Shelly warned, her voice rising.
Ask yourself these questions when you find yourself hunting for words to explain the dialogue in the tag:
Is Shelly’s dialogue showing her warning?
Is it clear from what Shelly says that her voice is rising?
What am I trying to show Shelly feeling with this tag?
You won’t need to ask yourself these questions as you discover your own style more, but in the meantime, it’s a good idea to look through your tags to see if any of them could be replaced, or simply deleted. Her outrage could have been shown much better by this sentence:
Correct:
“I don’t care if you kiss all the frogs in the world, you aren’t bringing that toad to my party.” Shelly glared, hands on hips.
Conjunction Tags
Incorrect:
“You look lovely in that dress,” Biff said, “and I think you’re going to be the belle of the ball.”
Although this break is all right occasionally, it should be used with extreme caution. A better approach is to lend depth to the moment at the break.
Correct:
“You look lovely in that dress.” Biff leaned closer, his words a whisper against her flesh. “I think you’re going to be the belle of the ball.”
Showing Impact
Incorrect:
She wanted to scream, to run for help, but she remained frozen, like a trapped animal. “You killed him for money?”
“Exactly,” he said.
“How could you?” She asked as adrenalin rushed movement back into her limbs and she backed away.
Obviously this is an excerpt from a larger scene. By the time the reader finds this exchange, they’ll be familiar with all the players. To add impact to a statement, it’s sometimes best to leave a tag off entirely, especially with a two-character exchange.
Correct:
She wanted to scream, to run for help, but she remained frozen, like a trapped animal. “You killed him for money?”
“Exactly.”
“How could you?” Adrenalin flooded her limbs and she backed away.
Multiple Tags
Incorrect:
“You have to understand,” Sean said as he clenched her wrists tighter. His eyes darkened with a menacing plea as he stated, “He was evil, I had to do it.”
In this paragraph, we are firmly in Sean’s head by the action described in the middle, there is no need to explain he is still speaking.
Correct:
“You have to understand.” Sean clenched her wrists tighter. His eyes darkened with a menacing plea. “He was evil, I had to do it.”
As with any rules in writing, there are always exceptions. However, once you’ve changed any of the problematic tags in your work to these more active and exciting tags, you’ll find the pace of your work becomes faster and the work overall is much cleaner.

Comments are off for this postSubjects and Verbs Stop Fighting: Subject-Verb Agreement
When subjects and verbs cannot and do not agree, the resulting battle creates an incorrect sentence. More and more this problem appears not only in speech but also in writing. However, learning how to make subjects and verbs agree isn’t very hard. First one needs to recognize the problem areas and then correct the error.
A verb must agree in number with its subject: A singular subject requires a singular verb; a plural subject requires a plural verb. Let’s examine some rules of subject-verb agreement, instances of incorrect usage, and how to repair the problem.
1. If a group of words including one or more nouns, such as an object of a prepositional phrase, comes between a subject and verb, be sure the verb agrees with the subject, not one or more nouns in the group of words or prepositional phrase. A subject separated from its verb still must agree with the verb.
Error: According to Mary Ellen, the boys on the team arrives late every day.
Correct: According to Mary Ellen, the boys on the team arrive late every day.
Error: The sea otter as well as the sea lion inhabit the waters of Alaska.
Correct: The sea otter as well as the sea lion inhabits the waters of Alaska.
2. Singular subjects joined by and should have a plural verb under most circumstances.
If the parts of the subject refer to more than one thing, use a plural verb.
Error: Oklahoma City and Tulsa is the largest cities in the state.
Correct: Oklahoma City and Tulsa re the largest cities in the state.
If the parts of the subject refer to the same thing, use a singular verb.
Error: The capital and largest city are Oklahoma City.
Correct: The capital and largest city is Oklahoma City.
3. When a compound subject is joined by or, either-or, nor, or neither-nor, the verb agrees in number to the subject closest to it.
Error: Either hyperbole or personification are used in each poem.
Correct: Either hyperbole or personification is used in each poem.
Error: Mary or Terry are next.
Correct: Mary or Terry is next.
4. A compound subject preceded by many a, every, a number, the number or each requires a singular verb.
Error: Each man and woman enjoy a delicious meal.
Correct: Each man and woman enjoys a delicious meal.
5. A verb agrees with the subject rather than a subject complement/ predicate nominative.
Error: The books on the table is the package that arrived today.
Correct: The books on the table are the packages that arrived today.
6. Make sure the verb agrees with its subject even if another word or phrase begins the sentence and/or the subject follows the verb (inverted order).
Error: There is several reasons for the test results.
Correct: There are several reasons for the test results.
Error: On much of the Alaskan landmass lives many animals.
Correct: On much of the Alaskan landmass live many animals.
7. A singular subject that ends in s requires a singular verb.
Error: The television series Da Vinci’s Inquest take place in Canada.
Correct: The television series Da Vinci’s Inquest takes place in Canada.
8. A singular verb is needed for the title of a work as the subject.
Error: The Princess Diaries tell the story of a young woman who discovers she is a princess.
Correct: The Princess Diaries tells the story of a young woman who discovers she is a princess.
9. A noun naming an amount that is used as a subject takes a singular verb.
Error: Six months of darkness make winter difficult in the far north.
Correct: Six months of darkness makes winter difficult in the far north.
10. Collective nouns may be singular or plural as used.
If the subject is considered as a whole group, a singular verb is required.
Error: A group of Native Americans, the Cherokee, live in northeast Oklahoma.
Correct: A group of Native Americans, the Cherokee, lives in northeast Oklahoma.
If the subject refers to each individual in the group, a plural verb is needed.
Error: The group offers different opinions as to how to spend the money.
Correct: The group offer different opinions as to how to spend the money.
11. Indefinite pronouns take a singular or plural verbs under deferent circumstances.
If the indefinite pronoun is singular, a singular verb is needed.
Error: Each of the girls take art.
Correct: Each of the girls takes art.
If the pronoun could be either singular or plural but refers to a singular noun, a singular verb is needed.
Error: Some of the catch are bass.
Correct: Some of the catch is bass.
If the pronoun, which could be either singular or plural, refers to a plural noun, a plural verb is required.
Error: Some of the parts is sold at discount stores.
Correct Some of the parts are sold at discount stores.
Keeping a few guidelines at hand can help writers remember how to make those subjects and verbs agree. Then writing becomes more peaceful and smooth.
