Picking The Right Retirement Location

Know the Right Retirement Location for You

You might be overwhelmed by the number of retirement locations offered across the country. Each of which may provide everything you need or the best comfort and amenities you are looking for. You might be confused on which of the retirement locations you would like to spend your retirement age.

Make a checklist of the things you need to help you narrow down your choices. This will help you to not overlook the important things that you need to consider. First list the things that matter most to you and then follow the secondary things that you are looking for.

Determine the advantages you will get on every retirement location and if it can help you achieve the conveniences you are looking for in a community. A lot of retirement locations offer medical services, house and facility maintenance and leisure and sports. The cost of every house may also vary depending on the retirement location and therefore should be considered.

Determine your needs to make the choosing easier for you. Ask yourself if you would like to live independently or you would like the retirement community to provide for your meals and daily needs. Also, consider the type of faculties you need or the kind of houses you prefer. Make sure that you are aware of the services being offered by each community and what things you do not like.

Your retirement location should be aligned with your own lifestyle. It should not stop your lifestyle, instead help you express it. If you are the type of person who prefers bible studies, then choose a location that will provide bible sessions with the other members of the community. You should look for a community that will give access to your hobbies. If you love sports, the retirement community that you should choose should have the facilities for sports and leisure.

Find out if the location is accessible and close to hospitals and other establishments. Also, consider if the location is near your family. The place should be accessible so that your family can visit you from time to time.

Determining these factors will help you with the selection process and will save time and effort. Retirement is a time to enjoy and live your life to the fullest and therefore, the retirement location you choose should be the right one for you.

IT Marketing: A Case Study

I was flipping through one of those junk mail advertising circulars that landed in my mailbox a couple days ago, and I noticed a colorful, full-page glossy advertisement on page two. This ad must have cost big bucks. Knowing what I know about advertising costs in my area, this must have been close to a $1,000 outlay (or more).

Avoid Poor Positioning with IT Marketing

But, it was one of the worst ads for positioning that I’ve ever seen. To prevent you from making the same IT marketing mistakes, I’m going to point out a couple of the biggest problems I saw. The headline read: “Computer Repair, I Come to You.” “I Come to You” isn’t a unique benefit anymore. If you’re doing strictly retail, of course it’s a nice benefit that you make house calls. But most computer services firms aren’t just going after retail customers anymore. With B2B, no one is going to lug their 25-node LAN into your shop to have you work on it. So “I come to you” is nothing unique… a totally wasted headline. You just lost your window of opportunity to grab someone’s attention.

Don’t Mention Price in Your IT Marketing

Then the ad went on to say: “Computer Repair A+ and Microsoft Certified Professional, Repairs, Upgrades, One-on-One Lessons and Tutoring”. Once again, nothing unique. These things are just like everyone else in the business. But what caught my eye is half of the ad says in big letters with a color screen behind it: “Don’t pay $40, $60 or $80 an hour for computer repair! Call us!” And then there’s a big retail-looking coupon right next to it that says in big green letters: “$20 an hour, in-home service”. Well, I’d like to congratulate this company. They win Joshua’s idiot of the week award for poor IT marketing.

They’re making every classic mistake there is!

Mistake #1: They have no target. They’re trying to go after their local slice of seven million small businesses and it’s way too hard to do that. They’re not even narrowing it down to small businesses. They’ll go out and fish someone’s stuck AOL disk out of their CD-ROM drive. They’ll go out and repair a $79 ink jet printer.

Mistake #2: They’re advertising price. Obviously this isn’t even a price that could be sustainable. Do the math. Even at 75% percent utilization (very unlikely with this advertising strategy), this company is never going to make it. Figure 30 hours a week at $20 an hour. That’s only $600 a week. There is no way this company is going to be in business for the long haul.

Mistake #3: They are saying nothing unique. This one is very important. What can you do that will help you be unique? You need to narrow down your focus and your specialization.

The Hawaii-Ironman-Will You be There?

Its been a long time since I raced in Kona, but I don’t believe the Ironman-Hawaii course has changed all that much.

The swim course I’m sure, is much the same as it was back in the early 80’s. Its truly unforgettable. Water so warm, that wetsuits are unnecessary. Tropical fish to marvel at for pretty well the length of the entire course. Water so clear, the bottom is clearly visible. The better to see the scuba divers sitting on the ocean floor, waving at you. Then making the turn at captain bean’s boat with the bright orange sails—crowded to overflowing with spectators.

Best of all is the current that seems to propel you towards shore as soon as the turn is made. The one downside to the entire swim experience is the sun that will be glaring into your eyes if you breathe to the right on the way back. For this reason alone, I would be sure to be able to breathe comfortably on both sides so you can have at least some relief from the sun if necessary. Also, tinted goggles are a big help. When you can make out the church steeple through the sun’s glare, you are almost home and finished the first leg of Iroman-Hawaii.

The bike leg for the most part has stayed intact as well. There is no escaping the endless miles of hot ashphalt of the now famous King K highway. The heat made even more oppressive when its absorbed and reflected by the lava rock that monopolizes the landscape. On the very hot Ironman days, heat waves are clearly visible as you strain to see the road ahead. In 1984 they were our constant companion as the temperature broke through the 100 degree mark out on the highway. To this day Ironman-Hawaii 1984 is still the hottest Ironman on record.

Then there is the long climb to the turn-around that is much more than just another hill. The hot winds sweep in from the ocean and can throw you to the ground in a second if you allow yourself to lose concentration. Finally, on the way home and you wait expectantly for the tailwinds that are sure to come, but for some reason never materialize.

Its with a great sense of relief and accomplishment that one reaches the bike-run transition only to head back out into nature’s oven once again.

The run course thankfully is fairly flat and the climb out of Kona might be the biggest hill of all. I’m not entirely positive as some of the run course has changed. Still once again, there is no avoiding the oppressive heat that has spelled the end to many Ironman dreams, especially for many pros as they are running full out in the heat of the day.

If there is any consolation to being an age-grouper intent on just finishing the Hawaii-Ironman, its that you get to run in the coolness that comes with the setting sun.

As you make the turn and head home for the final time it is truly a spectacle to behold as lite-sticks dot the landscape like yellow diamonds flickering in the sudden darkness of the tropical night.

The most welcome sight an age-grouper can see is the glow from the lights of Kona as you edge closer and closer to your Hawaii-Ironman dream.

The town is packed with spectators as you reach the long finishing stretch and make the final dash over the same ground that has seen so much drama over the years. Dave Scott, Tinley and the Puntos twins. Mark Allen and Julie Moss. Erin Baker, Paula Newby-Fraser and who can forget Laurie Bowden and husband Peter.

So much history and so many great names. If only it were possible for every Ironman to compete on this hallowed ground. It is just so moving and an experience one can never forget. If you are indeed “Ironstruck,” it should be your mission to be part of the grandfather of all Ironman events worldwide. Ironman-Hawaii–so much more than a race.

My name is Ray and I’m a veteran of 14 Ironman triathlons including Hawaii 1984.

A Keepsake Jar of Summer Memories

Our summer was certainly full of fun: outdoor barbeques, neighborhood cookouts, making ice cream, 4th of July parades, a trip to grandpa’s house, sleeping late, moving my oldest daughter into her first apartment… It never seems like the season is long enough to do everything we want to do.

Now that the summer is almost over, how do we preserve these memories? Take a few minutes before the busy routine of school begins to put together a family album of summer keepsakes. Whether it’s in a scrapbook, photo album, or shoebox, these mementoes chronicle tidbits of family life that often become lasting traditions. Your kids will love showing friends and family how they spent their summer vacation.

And don’t forget to snap a picture on the first day of school. We take a photograph in the same spot every year. My daughter left for her first year of college. In the opening page of her scrapbook were all of the pictures we had taken on the first day of school. From the scared preschooler with the little lamb name tag, to the confident, beautiful young woman she blossomed into, each picture was truly worth a thousand words.

Want a quick and easy way to make a time capsule of your summer vacation?

Find a large, clean, wide mouth jar (mayonnaise jars work well) to hold your treasures.

Gather together pictures, ticket stubs, sea shells, maps, souvenirs, pressed flowers or anything that has sentimental value from you summer vacation.

Write names and dates on the back of photographs. Place all of your items inside the jar. On brightly colored paper, write a few notes about each event. You may want to interview other family members for their thoughts as well.

Preserve your summer stories in a place of honor. Kids will enjoy getting their keepsake jar down to tell stories for many summers to come.

Customer Service – Not the Guru Way, but Three Simple Steps!

You can spend a fortune on having someone come and tell you how to deliver customer service, or you can do much more, for much, much less. There are three easy steps.

It’s just that having a tub-thumping guru on hand to do some extraordinary things (though mainly irrelevant – give them a dollar each and tell them the ‘buck stops with you’ – is an example), is more visible to stockholders, if quite pointless.

So bosses seem to be doing something special, when actually what is needed is a simple approach.

As Robert Tannehill, an expert on customer service training, comments on what ‘gurus’ do, as follows:-

“These fringy things that some motivational trainers have companies spend money on makes my blood boil. If these people do crazy things to give them the guru touch, they can get companies to spend thousands. Dancing even – huh?

You see, management actions ensure that bad service to customers is almost always – I’d give it 99% – not the fault of their sharp end operatives.

Here’s why…

1. They recruit the wrong people

So their most important business activity is screwed because they’ve got unfriendly people at their most vulnerable point.

Solution

Rigorously recruit ‘people’ people for your customer facing ambassadors. They have to be comfortable developing relationships that feel great and encourage real friendliness, customer and employee.

2. They fail to set the right conditions

Which will enable their people to work best.

Solution

Managers must make sure that they listen carefully to the issues getting in the way of their best people performing well – and fix them fast. This includes training them appropriately, which is usually mentoring on the job, by key employees who have the time and experience of doing this role really well.

3. They want too much

By giving their customer service people loads of ancillary stuff to do – at the same time.

Solution

Stop demanding more than one output from any of your people, who are giving your valuable customers the very best service at all times.

Three steps and save yourself tens or even hundreds of thousands in consultants fees. Easy!

Bextra and Vioxx Withdrawal Spawn Advertising Pause from Bristol Myers

Pharmaceutical giant Bristol Myers Squibb has announced that they will suspend direct-to-consumer advertising for their prescription drug products for a year. This comes in the wake of the well-publicized withdrawals of Merck’s Vioxx and Pfizer’s Bextra, two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that were voluntarily withdrawn from the market recently. Studies showed that they increase the likelihood of strokes and heart attacks among patients that take them for prolonged periods of time. This represents an unusual move for a pharmaceutical company, as they tend to spend a large portion of their annual advertising budget on direct-to-consumer advertising.

It is possible that Bristol Myers recognizes that consumers are becoming concerned about new drugs being approved by the FDA and advertised heavily, only to find out later that the drugs have previously unknown and possibly dangerous side effects. Consumers have learned that advertising a drug as “new and improved” doesn’t necessarily mean that it is new, or improved, or even safe. In short, customers are suspicious of pharmaceutical advertising, and the drug companies are to be commended for taking notice of that fact.

Since 1997, drug companies have been allowed by U.S. law to advertise directly to consumers. This has led to an astonishing number of ads on television and radio, as consumers see ads showing one happy person after another. The ads suggest that the happiness shown is a result of the use of the product, and a voiceover quickly mumbles through the known, and sometimes lengthy, list of side effects. Patients are encouraged to speak with their doctor, and they have been doing so in record numbers. The problem, as Bristol Myers know realizes, is that consumers are well aware that the withdrawn Bextra and Vioxx were advertised as being safe. This has naturally led to a general suspicion of all advertised drugs, and Bristol Myers correctly sees that they could be the victims of a drug-company backlash, even if they didn’t manufacture any of the withdrawn products.

This will probably save Bristol Myers a lot of money in the short term, as their advertising would have largely gone to waste. The Food and Drug Administration is taking steps to make sure that the drugs that reach the U.S. market are safe, and in time, the public will again become more trusting of pharmaceutical advertising. In the meantime, TV viewers will be spared from having to watch the sometimes-cryptic drug ads, which often prompt questions of “What does this drug do?”

Stretching Your Healthcare Dollar

Employers nationwide face critical decisions about their health benefits program. Should they continue funding their employees’ health benefits at the same contribution level as in the past? Should they keep the same level of benefits as before? What can be done to minimize costs and maximize benefits? These are tough questions.

Rising health care costs and an uncertain economy require an employer to examine various options when making health care decisions.

These include:

1. Eliminating all health benefits

2. Reducing or eliminating other fringe
benefits to maintain the current level of
health benefits

3. Modifying the existing health benefits
program by increasing employee co-payments
or cost-sharing

4. Shopping for the most affordable coverage available from various carriers

Finding solutions to dampen the effect of rising insurance premiums can be difficult. However, there is an additional consideration that is often overlooked. As with any vendor selection process, a business owner must consider the value gained from selecting a health benefits plan. Often, many look only at price and overlook the investment perspective involved in purchasing a health benefits plan. An employer should ask, “What am I getting for my money?”

A health plan should do more than simply pay the bills. It should provide opportunities to improve and maintain health. Health benefits plans that promote health fairs, wellness and disease management programs provide opportunities for achieving better health outcomes. Improved health outcomes can translate into reduced health care expenditures and affordable premiums.

Some health benefits companies are adding discount programs that focus on healthy living, including diet and nutrition counseling, and discounts at local fitness centers. Disease management programs focus attention and resources on conditions with which patient self-care efforts are significant. There are specific intervention programs for diabetes, asthma, wound care and congestive heart failure.

If you thought health care didn’t have enough acronyms, here is one more. Some carriers are beginning to offer Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). CAM focuses on alternative forms of health care treatment, such as massage therapy, acupuncture or homeopathy. CAM is one of the fastest-growing areas of employee health benefits. There are estimates that as many as 36 percent of adults use some form of CAM. These additional benefits are not just bells and whistles. The introduction of these programs often increases employee satisfaction. And increased satisfaction is a byproduct of the programs’ purpose. The aim of these programs is to focus on improving health outcomes. They seek to provide an improved return on the investment of premium dollars and create a shift in the traditional insurance paradigm of just paying bills.

When an employer chooses a health benefits company with programs that emphasize total health, it is making an investment in its employees’ well-being and future. Therefore, when selecting a carrier, remember to find one that provides opportunities to stretch your health care dollars by offering fitness
and CAM programs that help the mind, body and wallet.

5 Ways To Get The Best Use Out Of Your Home Treadmill

The #1 fear that people have when investing in a home treadmill (or any piece of exercise equipment) is that they won’t use it.

You know the story. It gets delivered, you set it up and enjoy it for a few days…and then it sits…and waits.

A few months down the road, you notice how dusty it has become and how much space it’s taking up. And you remember how much weight you were determined to lose by using it faithfully every day. But now, unfortunately, it doubles as a clothes rack.

Never fear. This article will help you make sure that DOESN’T happen.

A treadmill provides the best overall cardiovascular workout & it’s still the number one exercise machine for those who want to lose weight. So it’s an investment in your health that will pay large dividends…if you are prepared to get the maximum benefit from it!

Here are 5 easy ways to get the BEST use from your home treadmill:

#1) Do your research first

Make sure you look at what each treadmill offers you and compare it to your unique needs.

For example, if you live in a condo and/or like things neat and clean, a folding treadmill might suit you best. If you want a folding treadmill, do you prefer a manual folding treadmill (like most folding treadmills) or do you want a shock-assisted folding treadmill with wheels on the bottom that’s easy to move?

If you like to drink water during your workout, make sure there’s a water bottle holder included in the treadmill console (it might surprise you how many treadmills do not have this feature.)

Do you get bored easily and need a challenge? What about getting a treadmill with lots of user programs or one that is iFit compatible?

These things may seem little and maybe it might cost you a bit more; but if it means you’re actually going to enjoy your workout it will be well worth it!

#2) Place the treadmill in a ‘happy’ spot.

By ‘happy’ I mean well-lit, open and stimulating. Don’t put it so you face the bare wall when you walk or run. I’ve tried this this and the workouts don’t last long! If you get bored easily, put it facing the television or facing a window where you can have an attractive view while working out.

Rooms and spaces have definite ‘feels’ to them and that will affect the success of your workouts. Make sure your treadmill is placed in an area that makes you feel energized, happy and mentally stimulated.

#3) Get your exercise arsenal ready BEFORE the treadmill arrives.

Do you like listening to fast music when you exercise? Do you like watching your favorite movies? What about reading magazines? What inspires you to work out and feel your best?

Get these things ready even before your treadmill arrives and you’ll be three-quarters of the way there. Have several workout or favorite CD’s around. Get your favorite movies or shows on tape. Gather your favorite magazines.

By having an ‘exercise’ stash around your treadmill, you’ll be inspired to workout AND you won’t be stuck running around looking for something to do when you want to start exercising.

Again, this may seem simple, but it works. Why do you think gyms have magazines, televisions and CD players handy?

#4) Make an exercise plan.

Before you start working out, try making a plan, a “roadmap to your rock-hard body” so to speak. By writing down how long and what kind of workout you’ll be doing in week 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, you’ll get yourself psyched up for success.

Remember that every time you workout, you are planting the seeds for the kind of dream body that you want.

By having a plan, you can see just how many seeds you’ve planted (and even how long it will take to start reaping the results!) Have fun with it and you’ll be motivated to achieve your health goals (and get maximum benefits from your treadmill!)

#5) Track your progress

Ok this is related to #4 but it’s more of an ongoing thing. By tracking your progress every day, you get a major sense of accomplishment which snowballs into even greater fat-burning results.

I suggest you have ‘minimum goals’ like “I’ll walk for at least 10 minutes.” or “I’ll do 5-30 second intervals.” These are easy to do and you’ll probably go beyond them – which will encourage you even further and heighten your sense of accomplishment.

And of course, you’re also getting maximum benefit from your treadmill!

Those are 5 ways to get best use from your home treadmill. Just remember that even a little bit of preparation will pay off large dividends in the long run.
